“The banking industry is stale. It’s regulation on regulation and where ingenuity goes to

meetings and our CEO wearing flip-flops to work isn’t unusual. By the same token, Bridgewater Bank is considered a top-performing bank nationwide, was the first MN bank to complete a successful IPO in 25+ years, has attracted investments from top institutional firms from coast to coast, boasts an award-winning culture and has earned a reputation as a bank that understands our clients’ needs. Out of the 400+ banks in Minnesota, Bridgewater sits among the top 10 by asset size. We’ve disrupted a niche market, and with each milestone, we relish in and celebrate our successes together. This guide reveals what it means to be unconventional, who we are and what makes this place tick. We’re out to prove that serious growth and serious fun can effortlessly coexist. Still reading? I suppose I’ve caught your attention. If you’re lucky enough to work at Bridgewater Bank (also called BWB), you’re probably nodding your head to everything I’ve mentioned. If you don’t work here, I invite you to find out what the rave is all about. P.S. – just for the record, I’ve gotten to know some pretty awesome baby boomers, sans ties, since I took the leap into banking.

die. I don’t even like going to my bank. Aren’t banks managed by baby boomers who walk

around in their crisp Brooks Brothers ties and neatly polished shoes?”

Those were the brutally honest thoughts of my twenty-something self. Although my opinions were quite

biased, stigmas do exist. But that was my life BBB (Before Bridgewater Bank).

Maybe you’re a seasoned banker. Or perhaps a recent grad trying to land on your feet. No matter your

situation, I assume that you – just like everyone else – want to work for a great company. But what about

an unconventional company? What about working with nonconformists who think differently about their

industry? Just like Apple in the world of technology, we consider ourselves early adopters of what makes

banking a bit different in the Twin Cities. And it all started in 2005 with an entrepreneurial vision.

a letter from jerry baack. Like you (assuming you have already made the leap), I have a designated seat in this organization. Mine happens to be the visionary seat, which I must say I came to naturally. In 2005, I had a vision to build an entrepreneurial bank that would offer a simple platform where answers came quickly, opportunities were plentiful and the environment was positive and optimistic. I saw the opportunity to build a bank through an extensive network of entrepreneurs who were not only willing to invest but who would also become the Bank’s clients and promoters. I wanted to build a business that wasn’t dominated by one owner but rather where the ownership was diverse and plenty of us had skin in the game. I envisioned a bank where clients would notice a difference, where people would be challenged to grow both professionally and personally and where team members would be appreciated for sharing their skills and rewarded for a job well done. I hoped to create a space where people were passionate about making my vision a reality and where they would know they were making a difference.

lives of so many people. I understood we would provide financing for people looking to invest. I realized we would raise service standards and offer competitive options for saving. What I never anticipated was the thrill and challenge of building something from the ground up (including our state-of-the-art corporate office) and enriching a team of talented folks along the way. Every seat in this organization is important, and none of us can do it alone. The Bank evolves every day, and keeping pace with a growing organization is something we are challenged to do every year. As a BWB team member, you will hear us talk about the right person, right seat. To be successful at BWB, one must Want it, Get it and have the Capacity to do it. The Visionary seat is the job I want and the job I get, and by working together, we have the capacity to build an entrepreneurial bank second to none.

Welcome to the team.

our culture.

Let’s start by explaining what we believe. We believe name tags at work should be outlawed and that freshly-brewed local coffee should be accessible 24/7. We think paddleboarding is better when done together and a fully-stocked beer fridge makes people smile. Our branches aren’t typical brick-and-mortar offices, and our service is regarded as ‘best in class.’ We believe our culture is pretty awesome.

Why does this all matter? We envision a world where banking looks a little different. It boils down to our desire to pioneer what it means to be an unconventional bank. This industry doesn’t have to be monotonous. We shouldn’t be robot bankers. We believe this cause is a noble one because – at the essence of it – banking is a really important part of peoples’ lives. As a team, we’ve quietly grown this bank into one of Minnesota’s largest and attracted a loyal following every step of the way. We’ve disrupted what banking looks like in the Twin Cities, and we have the opportunity to positively impact our clients and their businesses each day. Join the Bridgewater team and you’ll quickly be surrounded by remarkable and nimble people who want to redefine what it means to work in banking. To each of us, this is more than a workplace – it’s a sense of community. This bank is lively, engaging and even evokes a sense of pride. Along our path to building the Finest Entrepreneurial Bank in the Twin Cities, you’ll notice that we never lose sight of what makes this place extraordinary – a steadfast commitment to our people. That’s how we do culture.

Core Values.

Our credo is based on five simple beliefs that explain how we do things here. Our Core Values determine how we hire, fire, reward and recognize. We want to work with people who embody these five values. Congratulations, and welcome – you must be one of them.

We strive to provide an exceptional client experience. Teammembers are experts at what they do. No task is too trivial to ensure that each client’s expectation is exceeded and their financial needs met. Creatively we execute and win. We have evolved greatly since our inception, experiencing growth within our business and among ourselves. We embrace challenges and inevitable change. Here, opportunities for personal growth and contribution are endless. When our people soar, our business will fly. Accuracy is the foundation of our business. Our mandate is to get it right the first time. Perfection may not always be a reality, but we own our actions, correct our mistakes and learn from our experiences.

D E D I C AT E D DON’T STOP UNTIL YOU GET IT DONE

Flexibility and action differentiates us from most traditional banks. Our prevailing optimistic culture and absence of hierarchy and politics keeps us looking and feeling like a non-traditional bank.

In 2010, Bridgewater Bank implemented the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) and never looked back. Known as a set of simple concepts and practical tools to help entrepreneurs obtain their goals, EOS keeps us laser focused on ways to propel the Bank forward. Within no time, terms like Traction, rocks and cascading messages will become common knowledge. With EOS, we continually experience growth and tackle challenges head on.

Our All Team Meetings bring the team together to recognize where we’ve been and where we’re going. With team members across the Twin Cities, this is our chance to assemble together and celebrate our success. Guided by the Strategic Leadership Team, we discuss the Bank’s growth and initiatives. Additionally, nominations and accolades are shared and celebrated. As always, refreshments and hors d’oeuvres are abundant and unconventional twists and turns are to be expected.

Packer fan or not, we can all appreciate Vince Lombardi’s infamous saying, “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.” At BWB, we believe that our people are the secret sauce that fuels our growth and financial performance. And it takes a team of talented and dedicated individuals, like you, to keep this ship afloat. But how does it all work? We invite you to familiarize yourself with the org. chart on pages 32-33. The org. chart gives you a clear understanding of the operations behind the Bank’s deposit and loan activity. Think of this as the “behind the scenes tour” of BWB.

At BWB, we use built-in performance review processes throughout the year so that you have opportunities to give and receive feedback. Within the EOS model, each team member has two 555 meetings (four months apart) and one annual review each year. The 555 meeting is a conversation between the manager and direct report that focuses on our five core values, the five “Rocks” (top priorities), and the five key responsibilities of the team member’s role. These practices allow for the performance management process to be collaborative and focused on what’s most important to drive our business forward.

Many factors will be taken into account when approving a reimbursement request, including the relevance to your job, the costs involved, time commitment, etc. If you leave BWB within a year of incurring $1,000 or more in training costs, you will be responsible for reimbursing the amount in excess of $1,000. With growth often comes change. If you are interested in other positions at BWB, we welcome you to apply when openings are available if you meet the qualifications for the new role, have been in your current position for at least 12 months and have satisfactory performance. To apply for an open position, contact HR and speak with your current manager.
